Enthusiastic conversation with and by industry people.
Amusingly, Guy has spent years backing Dave Gilmour but thinks guitarists can just "sing and play right off the bat". In reality the bass is handed to the vocalist when a band forms to save finding one and also keeping staff costs down, because one note at a time with no pedals and no real challenge means it's no problem for most.

Pipe down Guy.

Great show, great guests. Would be five stars if Guy didn’t constantly interrupt and/or talk over Gary. Huge ignoramus.

Nice to hear inside info on British musical history from the icons of the industry.
Even better recently since the hosts interrupt less and allow the guests to chat more.

I found this late and have been loving catching up - still 18 episodes to go.
Great insight as it’s rockers talking to rockers. Have found myself dipping into music again or finding new music like Gary’s “waiting for the band” and Def Leppards Yeah album. Great job Gary & Guy

Love this!!!

I’m a late comer to the podcast and am playing catch up whilst running. Double David Coverdale, Scott Gorham and Glenn Hughes. Also impressed by the broad spectrum of guests - great to hear that Gary and Guy are like minded in that music IS just that…Music. Please ask Ricky Warwick to be a guest.

Great podcast - shame about the lack of women

Gary Kemp is a fantastic interviewer. So is Guy Pratt when he allows the guests to talk. Just a real shame there is so few women. I have counted twelve in a hundred and twenty four episodes. If they aren’t careful they’ll have to call it The Cockenteurs.

Great…but get some better mics!

I didn’t want this to end ! Excellent chat with Terry Reid so modest and so many great stories ! You have to get him back on! I’ve been listening to the podcast for a while now and it’s become my favourite podcast. It’s amazing who you’ve managed to invite, many of them my music heroes. The recent Mick Hucknall episode was also fascinating, I now have a far greater appreciation of his music knowing some of the background stories. He is someone else you need to ask back!

First of all, I don’t agree with the reviewer who said Giles needs to calm down. I think he’s hilarious and often very insightful. Plus he’s a great bassist. Secondly, this is great. A roll call of fantastic guests. I’ve been listening to my favourites first, then picking randomly through the rest and in virtually every one I wish they would keep talking ! In these wobbly times this is the kind of intelligent music chat we need. Well done guys, and thank you. PS I know it probably won’t happen but I would love to hear you chat with Kate Bush.
And how about one of your contemporaries, Gary ? Dave Gahan or Martin Gore ? Or both ?

Brilliant, interesting and a lot of fun

I happened upon this by pure chance when I saw a chat with Guy on Scott’s Bass Lessons and he dropped in a shameless plug. (Thanks Guy, you’re a leg-end).
I’ve learned so much and laughed a hell of a lot and I’m only about 40 episodes in. Can you get David Coverdale and Joe Elliot at the same time please, that would be a riot.
It’s probably a coincidence that so many bass players turn up but as a bassist myself (stop yawning at the back) it makes it more interesting.
There are a lot of people and music that I’ve never paid much attention to and this is my chance to correct that. If I find someone interesting, I give their stuff a go, regardless of genre.
Thanks Gary and Guy, especially Guy for putting me on to this and Hey! he’s a bass player too in case you missed him mention once.
Keep it up lads :)

I only recently discovered this and have started right from the beginning. I love hearing about where and how people started there careers and only wish I had this insight when I was 16: I may even have been a guest myself. Determination sprinkled with a good dose of luck seems to be the order of the day!! One suggestion, if he’s up for it, Herbie Flowers (yes, I did have to check if he was still alive!!)? Both Guy and Gary are so engaging and funny.

Into season 2, trying to get through them all as the guests are fascinating. But can’t do any more. Pratt is so unbelievably irritating - constantly interrupting and talking over people to say nothing at all, loving the sound of his own voice and desperately trying to be funny. (He isn’t). Kemp is getting worse at this too, presumably to compete with Pratt. Those two trying to compete with other whilst also competing with the guest is just too much. Such a shame as I could listen to most of the musicians they have on talking, on their own, all day!

I first stumbled across the Rockonteurs podcast in late 2000. Lockdown had been testing, a change of career took place and I found myself largely working from home. I got more into Podcasts as I worked and discovered this gem. Since then, I don’t think there is one episode that I haven’t enjoyed. Gary and Guy have a great rapport with their guests and foster an environment which produces fascinating conversations. Highly recommended, whatever music you’re into.

Some excellent interviews from a wide range of people in the music biz. However, as has been mentioned by at least one other review, the frequent interruption of the interviewee is intensely annoying. Seem to occur as the person being interviewed is in mid-anecdotal flow and you never get to hear the end of the story! Nonetheless, a good podcast series overall. Get rid of the interruptions and it would be 4 / 5 star.

Just listened to the Peter Asher episode and found it so irritating when Guy Pratt keeps endlessly butting in & talking over the guest, he loves the sound of his own voice. Pratt ruins a number of these podcasts by continuously trying to be funny but quite frankly he spoils the chat for everyone else.

Huge thanks for Gary and Guy for delving into their contact lists and beyond for this series. It’s in my top three listens.
I’ve just finished listening to the Don Black episode which, I think, is one of the best yet. The success is doubtlessly influenced by interviewing people who have genuine stories to tell; however, they know what questions to ask because they’ve been there and done it.
I also enjoyed the question time episode, which would be great as a monthly ‘bonus’. Also, chaps - when you run out of guests, how about interviewing each other?!!
Thanks again for a great series.

What a wonderful podcast!
I am very fond of this podcast. Gary and Guy have the knowledge of the business and they have the love of the music. They appreciate other artists and they have a great sense of humour. They always say something that makes me laugh out loud. They have a knack with their interviews which are always insightful and revealing. All the interviewee’s are relaxed and open. It’s like friends having a relaxed conversation over a beer or two. I hope they keep going with this podcast. It’s so good I often replay the interviews. Not something I do very often!! Thanks guy’s, I love your podcast!

Essential listening for anyone interested in music. As usual, you start off being drawn to the names you recognise and then find incredible gems throughout. It is great to have such warmth and genuine affection from Guy and Gary which makes for immersive and insightful interviews. Only occasionally do they know the Guests so well, they forget to fill in the gaps for the listener. This is my go to podcast

I’m enjoying these podcasts. Gary and Guy are well researched, they work to bring out the more reserved guests but allow the more extroverted guests to flow. I am listening to several unfamiliar artists and enjoying them going to listen to their music - David Coverdale is one example! I would have never listened to Whitesnake! But Gary K was correct Is this Love? Is an incredible track. As constructive criticism- I just listened to Boy George, he is engaging as usual. But I would liked for Gary and Guy to delve deeper into his song writing and creative process. We all know the tabloid stories but I would have liked to know how he created such massive songs in the 80’s with no experience and now 40 years later what’s changed and how his working process is now. I would like to hear from ex-Japan members please.
