Dana Michel is a live performance artist and choreographer in Montreal, Canada, where she creates experiences based on a mixture of improvisation, choreography, hip-hop, cinematography, techno, poetry and social commentary. Now 47, she self identified as autistic in 2020. She also has a diagnosis of ADHD.
Before graduating in Contemporary Dance in her late twenties, Dana was a marketing executive, competitive runner and football player.
During her career as a performance artist she has received several awards, including an award for outstanding artistic accomplishments, the Silver Lion for Innovation in Dance and an International Prize for Live Art. She has been highlighted among notable female choreographers of the year by the New York Times, and was the first ever dance artist in residence at the National Arts Centre, Canada.
Dana is currently touring four solo performance works.

We talk about:
➡ Why 'autism pants' feel more comfortable to her than 'ADHD pants'
➡ Her reaction to being diagnosed as 'twice exceptional' and 'gifted'
➡ Needing people to believe and accept our autism
➡ Being in another world as a child, and struggling to fit into the professional world as an adult
➡ Burnout, and how Dana feels that she was saved from the professional grind by following her autistic joy, and how she's found ways to overcome her feelings of not wanting to live in the world.

Brilliant

This podcast has been so helpful and fascinating as a late identified ND woman looking to find relatable content. Amy and her brilliant guests have such interesting and nuanced conversations and it’s great to have neurodivergence being talked about openly and from such a wide variety of perspectives.

Fabulous *****

I absolutely love this podcast, I’ve binged from the start on the days I work from home for about 4 weeks now. I have tried to change It up and listen to some other podcasts that I like but I am completely invested in this and I’m enjoying it so much that I don’t want to listen to any others.
The knowledge and information this podcast provides is wonderful.
If you get a chance to listen to it, do it, it’s brilliant 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

Hopeful

As a mum of a young adult female who was diagnosed 4 years ago this podcast is a ray of hope, it explains my daughters difficulties and helps me understand and appreciate her differences, I wish more NT people listened and educated themselves. I love the sensitivity and freedom people have on this podcast to share their stories, a must listen for all x

The best podcast for Autistic Women! I recommend it to everyone!

I love Square Peg Podcast so much! It’s the only podcast that I consistently want to listen to, I’d listen every day if I could! Amy is an excellent host (and has an easy to listen to voice- a problem I find with a lot of podcasts due to my sensory issues) and even 4 seasons in she consistently comes up with a variety of great guests and interesting, relatable topics. This is the one place where I truly feel like I’ve found ‘my people’ and the explanation of how a lot of female presenting Autistics experience Neurodiversity differently to the textbook presentation and Stereotype of Autism. I have learnt so much and the work Amy is doing is truly valuable, long may it continue!

Wow!

Finally got round to listening to this podcast, started with Fern Brady, this was fantastic and really informative! Being a 45 yr old female with a recently diagnosed son, I have been thinking that I am exactly like my son, but having listened And identifying a lot of stuff mentioned is exactly me… has been a great relief! Thanks Amy for a brilliant podcast… can’t wait to crack on and listen to some more!

Excellent, well-informed, and heartwarming.

After discovering this podcast recently, I've started a new, fulfilling self-discovery journey. Amy has done an amazing job creating an inclusive podcast telling the inspiring stories of many outstanding individuals while also contributing to create awareness about autistic women.

So helpful!

It’s been such a relief to find there are other women out there who experience the same challenges as me. I really always just thought that I was weird or incapable.
Since listening to this podcast I’ve started to view myself in a new light and have felt so much relief and can finally be kinder to myself.
Things are starting to make sense and I really can’t thank you enough.

Series 2 Ep 9 Right diagnosis

Spoke to me completely. Thinking I'm bipolar instead of possibly autistic. Imposter syndrome. Driving hahahaha. I have such road rage because I don't read other drivers' intentions. Have had 2 love affairs with past cars. Such a revelation. Makes the whole Theory of Mind make sense!

Wonderful podcast!

I look forward to this podcast each week. Whilst not diagnosed autistic I share so many traits with the host and guests it does make me wonder. I love hearing about how the guests have adapted their lives to cope and thrive. It makes me feel positive and hopeful I can have a fulfilling life & being “me” is ok. Thank you so much Amy.

Highly recommend

Amy has created such a wonderful resource with this podcast. A brilliant investigator and listener, with each interview she peels away the layers of life on the spectrum and raises awareness around a topic so often misunderstood.

Interesting and informative. I have really enjoyed listening to the experiences of the speakers so far. It is uplifting and reassuring to hear experiences which resonate with my own - although in a minority we are not alone! The differences are also illuminating and demonstrate that there is a wide range of autistic experience and expression. Each one of us is after all a unique human being.
I know it is hard to get good recordings when reliant on online connections, but as someone with sound hypersensitivity I found some parts physically difficult to listen to - but they were few and I recommend this podcast despite the technical issues.

So far, excellent

My only frustration with this is wanting more, I want to binge listen. Really looking forward to the next episodes. This community of autism - ‘late’ adult diagnosis and the intersection with queer sexuality is not all that niche really, there’s quite a lot of us out there, looking for interesting content like this. So far the advice / ‘inspiration’ is realistic and achievable and that’s a lot better than being told to ‘reach for the stars’ or ‘you can do ANYTHING you set your mind to’. Keep it up.

The Square Peg podcast

I had the privilege of talking with Amy as she was developing this podcast and I’m so thrilled to see it out in the world. Amy is such a courageous woman who has found true purpose in changing the narrative around autism and neurodiversity. Her podcast is such an important resource for anyone who wants to have a greater understanding of the issues and the impact they have on the people affected. These are powerful conversations that give a voice to often untold stories with empathy and compassion. Essential listening for anyone interested in making the world a better place for everyone.

Important and influential podcast

It was an honour to be one of the guests on this podcast. Amy is doing really important work, chatting to neurodivergent women about our experiences. I hope this will be a very influential podcast, and I can’t wait to hear more episodes 😀

Really interesting and thought provoking

Just listened to this podcast which was really interesting. The subject is new to me and I found it an eye-opener, and a real inspiration. Particularly enjoyed the discussion around gender stereotypes and how being nonbinary doesn't fit with our preconceptions. I have always felt that gender preconceptions are wrong and listening to this podcast emphasised why.

The Squarepeg Podcast

I’ve just binged all the episodes. Really insightful conversations with interesting and entertaining guests. As a neurotypical person it’s a great opportunity to gain a better understating of how autism impacts the lives of neurodiverse people by hearing about their actual, lived experiences.
