Time: 30:50
JJ Chalmers, former Royal Marine, multi-medal-winning Invictus Games athlete and Strictly Come Dancing contestant, reveals how gardening has been part of his healing process after life-changing injuries, suffered while on patrol in Afghanistan in 2011.
He shares how it helps him and his family connect with nature, how he overcomes physical challenges that are the lasting legacy of his injuries, and why he thinks gardening can benefit us all. JJ discusses the mental health benefits of gardening and how, after working as a teacher in some deprived areas, he’s observed that it could help more young men and women through their own tough times. Above all, he shares the joy that his garden gives him, sharing it with his young family and passing on to them his lifelong love of being outdoors.

Hello
I would love to be on your podcast.
Something a little different. I have developed a rather unique beehive nest box beehive. And system of beekeeping.
Developed primarily for my own investigation of honeybees I have evolved a system like no other. Resulting in bees that are less stressed. Thus happier and healthier.
Hope to hear from you soon.

We listened to the veg episode as we grow lots ourselves. It took too long to get to the main interview which was then excellent. I would prefer a more compact show.

Really inspiring episode, really great questions that were answered really well. It’s a joy to hear all those niggly questions being asked and answered. I’m starting a small, I do mean small, veg plot this year after many failed attempts, can’t wait to get out there and use some of your helpful tips.

How totally inspiring ! I can’t think of anything as important as getting youngsters into the garden . The school features is amazing. Students will learn so much and realise there is so much more to learning that a rigid curriculum! More ideas for us humble teachers please !

I was eagerly awaiting the release of the GW podcast and I am not disappointed. What makes this podcast content stand out from others (especially with Monty) is that what is captured is not so much the practical detail but the ‘big picture’ gardening spirit, which is so inspirational and motivational. Loved all the episodes so far.
Thank you.

Not to be missed !

Stuffy and pretentious. Little to no enjoyable content with the lightest mulch of informative content.
Ironically the first episode spoke about getting young people into gardening, and listening to this would put me off entirely.

I really enjoyed the first episode, very uplifting and inspiring. I can’t wait for the next instalment as this was a lovely way to unwind and relax when the days and short and the weather is not as bright. Gardening has been a lifeline during lockdown, a chance to get away from the virtual desk, mark the seasons and also to see progress when things otherwise can feel restrictive and repetitive. Would highly recommend listening.
