Introducing Gangster: The Story of John Palmer

Introducing Gangster: The Story of John Palmer

The story of John Palmer - a Godfather figure who became as rich as the Queen.
Time: 4:22
Livvy Haydock travels from the streets of post-war Birmingham to the sun-kissed beaches of Tenerife - following the rise and fall of one of Britain’s richest, and most wanted, serious organised criminals.
It’s a story of violence, mystery, murder and police corruption - of how an illiterate lad from a broken home went on to become as rich as the Queen - leaving a trail of destruction in his wake.
Palmer owned a Learjet, a yacht, helicopters, a collection of fast cars and a chateau in France. A wheeler dealer jeweller who started by selling paraffin from the back of a lorry and was catapulted to the top of the criminal world after the Brink’s Mat heist in 1983 - the largest armed robbery in British history. He smelted millions of pounds worth of the gold, earning himself the moniker ‘Goldfinger.’ He then went on to mastermind a multi-million pound time share fraud on Tenerife, scamming thousands of innocent victims who lost their life savings.
In a series of exclusive interviews, Livvy hears from his associates and his victims - many of whom have never spoken before. And she meets the detectives who were tasked with bringing him to justice.
This podcast includes strong language and descriptions of violence.

Not only was the story interesting, if you’re from that era the music tracks played were also excellent listening. I’m always surprised that friends and family are puzzled when these types of people are taken out. They never accept the suffering they inflicted on others while continuing to enjoy a lavish lifestyle of the I’ll gotten gains.

This podcast really looked into the insight of the person who was John Palmer, gave me a lot of information that I didn’t already know and also didn't over glorify the situation.

This is where the BBC glamourise dreadful violent crimes and times. Painting a picture of the relevant crime filled socio-economic climate as ‘progressive’. Here’s a simple translation of key phrases
Vibrant multicultural area = violent ghetto
Just a nice local lad = violent hate filled criminal
Legend = convicted violent criminal
Bit of a character = violent youth
Changing times = the demise of law and order
Bit of a beating = extremely violent crime

Gangster is one of the very few podcasts I binge. All the seasons so far have been riveting with high quality journalism with great archive snippets and period soundtracks. It’s just very good!

This could be great if only not for the LOUD SOUND EFFECTS ALL THE TIME! “He lived on a barge”... LOUD BARGE SOUNDS, it was the 80s ... LOUD 80s music! WE GET IT YOU HAVE SOUND EFFECTS! 😂

Good but could be so much better

This is well researched and interesting. However, I don’t like the glamorisation of these people who are a cancer on society. The presenter seems to be slightly in thrall to people who devastate the lives of millions and cost billions of pounds worth of damage to the U.K. economy.

Representative of a certain type of BBC podcast / documentary that purports to lift the lid on an underworld but in the end offers nothing of real substance. Kind of lock stock n’ two smoking barrels esque (epitomised by the presenter’s delivery of the word ‘gangster’ in the opening sequence) and questionable glorification of a man who was clearly capable of shocking violence and who ruled through fear. Such a shame because there are some interesting nuggets of information in it and it could have done so much more.

It does glamorise gang violence in my opinion but it’s still an interesting podcast. However, it could easily be a three parter if they cut out all the trailers, repetitions and catch ups.
