11. To the Brink

An isolated Putin sets his sights on Ukraine.
Time: 27:30
In late 2021, Vladimir Putin emerges from his Covid-19 bunker with an even smaller inner circle, increasingly outlandish demands of NATO and the west, and an immense military build-up on the border of Ukraine. How did seclusion change his mindset? And how did the west misunderstand him so badly?
To understand the Russian President and interpret his words and actions in those crucial weeks before the invasion, Jonny Dymond is joined by:
Andrei Soldatov - Investigative journalist, specialist in Russia’s intelligence services, and author of ‘The Compatriots: The Russian Exiles Who Fought Against the Kremlin’
Sarah Rainsford - BBC Eastern Europe Correspondent and former Moscow Correspondent
Sir Laurie Bristow - Former British diplomat and UK Ambassador to Russia, 2016-2020.
Production coordinators: Helena Warwick-Cross and Siobhan Reed
Sound engineer: Rod Farquhar
Producer: Nathan Gower
Researcher: Octavia Woodward
Series Editor: Simon Watts

Well researched, evidenced and balanced

A fantastic series that is well researched, evidenced and balanced.
Offers an unrivalled insight to Putin’s background which helps to better understand why he has such a craving for power, wealth, respect and influence and how that has led him to cynically do such terrible things to hold onto it.
A intelligent, corrupt and thin skinned small man wielding his nation and military.
Once again the BBC nails it and demonstrates why a free press is the third pillar of free society. The Conservative party would do well to remember that.

Cheap poorly produced liberal propaganda.

If you’re looking for any serious study to bring real knowledge about Putin, you’re in the wrong place here I warn you.

Superb pocket size history. Enlightening.

Excellent reporting and easy to understand information. Laid out in a quick fire approach without ‘filler’. I’ve recommended this to several colleagues who normally would not bother with this sort of podcast and this has created rich conversations.
