Do you take accents in movies for granted? Dialect coaching is a whole career, and I get to talk to William Conacher about his 28 years of experience, including coaching the idiolects of real people. Actors he has coached to recreate specific people's voices include: 4 separate Princess Dianas, Rami Malek in Bohemian Rhapsody, and now Cillian Murphy for J. Robert Oppenheimer.

The real Oppenheimer had a privileged education in New York City and spoke with an accent known as Mid-Atlantic (somewhere between British and American accents). That accent has less R coloring (less pronunciation of Rs) more T pronunciation, particular words that marked the accent.

Besides that, specific words can mark an accent, or an idiolect. Oppeneimer always said 'nuclear' with a Y (like my grandmother)

You can hear how William's process has been formed over many years. And having known Cillian Murphy for over 20 years, it's even difficult for William to describe his process, because once you're close with someone, there are so many shortcuts to remind them, even when he wasn't allowed to be on set with Cillian.
