Rewilding Africa’s Sahel region with John Watkin

Rewilding Africa’s Sahel region with John Watkin

Time: 30:31
“Our hallmark is the reintroduction of the Scimitar-horned Oryx… It’s a beautiful, beautiful beast and it was a tragedy that it was allowed to go extinct in the first place.”
The Scimitar-horned Oryx, the animal symbol of Sahara Conservation, was driven to extinction in the wild in the 1990s due to a lethal combination of overhunting, drought and habitat loss.
In this episode Ben Goldsmith is joined by John Watkin, the outgoing Chief Executive of Sahara Conservation. John and his team were charged with restoring a truly immense landscape in Africa’s Sahel region, including the reintroduction of species that have almost disappeared or have been lost from the region entirely.
Join rewilding enthusiast and financier Ben Goldsmith as he speaks to environmental trail blazers from all corners of the globe.
Recent climate science seems to paint a picture of despair with irreparable damage being done to our natural world. But there are rays of hope. Across the planet people are carrying out astonishing work, returning large areas of land and oceans back to their former glory.

Fantastic

I read God is an Octopus by Ben Goldsmith and that led me to this podcast. If you’re feeling down about all the bad news about climate change, this pod will help you realise that there are good people in the world trying to change things for the better. What I like about Ben is his knowledge about rewilding - I’ve learned so much about ecosystems and how much damage we have done to the environment in this country but also around the world. Ben’s enthusiasm and easy broadcasting style makes this a fascinating and informative podcast. The book is a great read, too.

Golden Steppe

This is a fascinating account of a massive restoration project in which the RSPB have been involved for 15 years working with a supportive government to restore ecological balance to an area the size of France & Germany combined. Excellent podcast - thanks. 🙏

Expanding my rewilding horizons

Positive and optimistic - just like rewilding itself

This is a fantastic podcast series of interviews with key rewilders and their projects from around the world. The language, style, tone, and content of the episodes make them very engaging, positive, and optimistic, just like rewilding itself. If you are just starting your journey of rewilding discovery, then I’d recommend starting with the “What is rewilding?” episode from 3rd August in which Ben chats with 2 of the UK’s most prominent authorities regarding rewilding.

August episode

I enjoyed the August episode for a number of reasons. Firstly it really brought the debate back to basics. It clearly navigated the what and the why of Rewilding for people like me who are somewhat unfamiliar with the term and have mostly heard the term used in policy narrative (it doesn’t get a good wrap). Secondly, the sensibility of the host and his guests to touch upon the fundamental reasons why nature is so important to human beings, really struck a chord with me. I grew up in Somerset and after being exposed to grief for the first time over covid, I’m not sure how I would have coped without nature holding my hand. A basic right we should all have, not a privilege.
Thank you for cutting through the noise.
Looking forward to season 2

Some positive news to raise my hopes for the future

This podcast actually gave me hope. We watch many programs that actually make me feel depressed about the state of the planet but this talk was much more optimistic- so thank you.

Inspiring podcast

Too often issues like climate change and disappearing nature are reported on with negative stance. However in order to realistically deal with these issues we need to see that there is more than just a glimmer of hope. Bens podcast is positive but realistic. Spread the word

A ray of sunshine

I’m an ordinary, middle-aged man, working longer hours than I want, but with a long-standing passion for nature and dreams of my own little rewilding projects. Listening to this series of podcasts, and the inspirational people Ben speaks to, is my escape into the joy of nature and the hope that our natural world can be restored. Ben, I’m sure you have read it, but Flowers for Elephants is a fantastic book by Peter Martell, and tells another wonderful story… Perhaps the focus of another engaging episode?!

The ‘must listen’ podcast on landuse

This is the go-to podcast on large-scale nature recovery, future land use, and sustainable livelihoods and land economies. Rewilding has a massive role to play in getting the climate system back in balance and building resilient nature-based economic dynamism across landscapes and regions. Alongside regenerative farming, it’s the future.

Wild about this!

I can’t tell you how much I’m enjoying this podcast.
It is so uplifting and inspiring, I literally needed it for my soul - I am too prone to the gloom and the utter hopelessness of the popular view of ‘progress!
At last, an antidote👏🙏🏻🤞
