Description

Host Tristan Redman is a seasoned journalist who doesn’t believe in ghosts. But weird things happened in the bedroom he lived in as a teenager. When he discovers years later that subsequent occupants of the same house have been visited by the ghost of a faceless woman, he’s curious. Because it just so happens that Tristan’s childhood home is right next door to the house where his wife’s great grandmother, Naomi Dancy, was murdered in 1937 – killed by two gunshots to the face. Could there be a connection between the ghost and the murder? Tristan decides to investigate and soon finds himself going where no son-in-law should go, deep into his wife’s family history, asking questions no one wants answered.

Utterly brilliant

This podcast is a masterclass in storytelling, storytelling suspense and intrigue. Beautifully formatted, narrated and paced. Utterly compelling and my favourite show of 2023 - and I’m a podcaster myself!

Very good!

Really enjoying this, not because I believe in hauntings, but what it demonstrates about how people react to the Truth about their antecedents. I have a grandfather who was a criminal, but I am not shaken to my core by it. I don't have any inflated ideas about who I am, so am not devastated to find my forebears have feet of clay. Little sympathy or appreciation is shown for poor Naomi, who is rather a remarkable woman and I would be proud to have her as a grandmother, rather than Feyther Walter Mitty. I look forward to the final episode. I think Family Gatherings for Tristan may be a tad awkward going forward.

Fabulous

Love Tristan’s story telling and the mix with his wife spot on. Keep on producing podcasts wonderful journalism. However I do feel sorry for the family, but that does make this story more interesting.

Good podcast

There’s no doubt this is a really good podcast so do give it a listen. Was a bit disappointed it felt like Tristan sat on the fence in the end so as not to insult his wealthy in-laws 😂

Absolutely thrilling.

I can’t stop listening. This is an incredible podcast and I am so glad it’s in the world. What a well thought out, well made, well researched story. Honestly, one of the best things I have listened to. Thank you for creating it.

Intelligent, gripping and funny!

I enjoyed this so much. The whole aspect of ghosts and all that could turn one away from a mystery like this was explored and handled so well. Tristan sounds utterly normal and not one to get carried away ( but he does admit an obsession with the story!) All the relatives and detectives that he interviews bring credibility and interest. A great listen

A brilliant podcast

This is the best podcast I’ve ever listened to. I loved the transition from ghost story through detective drama to something much more existential. I loved how it opened up questions about the role of historical understanding in shaping our identity, this family drama posing much wider questions that I grapple with when talking to my children about our (British) past/present role in the world. I also loved how the self-told/created story of the man obliterated the story of a very impressive family. Huge well done to you Tristan & your team and thank you to the Dancy family for your openness.

Insanly good

Last episode took me through so many emotions. Finding out about who Naomi was and a little about what she achieved was inspiring. Whatever happened - I am so glad that I got to hear about this incredible woman and the impact she had. Truly remarkable.

Great podcast

Great podcast in both true crime and horror genres with an absolute professional host and crew
I have a theory of why do Morris wounds look self indicted and why he didn’t use a gun
“This is just a theory”
Maybe He actually did that to himself but it wasn’t technically a suicide
Maybe Dr. John had the gun and made Morris commit suicide by forcing him with a gun

Very Interesting.

Murderers make hesitation marks too you know Hamish Campbell 🙄 John had clear motive, means and opportunity and was clearly narcissistic. Probably Machiavellian. So arrogant that he’s calling a well known author bragging about how he did the crime! But yes Hamish, let’s ignore all that other irrelevant, pesky, silly evidence. Weird.
This is a very well put together podcast and the detail it goes into is very satisfying. Little dramatisations are excellent. I haven’t quite gotten to the end yet so may well come back and edit this. But so far the details of the ghostly goings on are unsettling.

LOVED every minute

One of the best podcasts I have ever listened to. Absolutely loved this series, binged it yesterday & I have already recommended it to all my friends. Demonstrates the importance of ensuring the victim’s story is heard and remembered. I’m so glad that Naomi’s story was told and I was in complete tears by the final episode. Also, rule number one, if someone’s life sounds too good to be true, it is.

👻 I was totally and utterly INVESTED 👻

Hats off to you all..
I couldn't wait for the next episode
I really enjoyed this.. it was full to the brim with everything!
There's darkness, laughter, sadness, intrigue, coincidences, anxiety, awkwardness frustration.
I couldn't guess the ending, i was hoping it wasn't you know who!! I loved the fact you took your time with us Tristian. It was complicating at timed but i kept up, findings myself totally emerged in this family. I found myself still asking questions long after I'd listened, one thought about his 2nd wife, did the baby survive? The hairs on my arms stood up several times especially towards the end..
Anyhow fascinating stuff and brilliantly executed, thoroughly enjoyable. Thank you!

Complex and fascinating

Not a simple ghost story; this makes Uncanny (of which I am a fan) seem totally one dimensional. So much research and thought has gone into this. Am enjoying every single piece of evidence that adds to a constantly shifting view of the central story. This podcast is about how and why we tell stories and the impact of family histories on our lives.

Captivating but somewhat awkward

I got quickly captivated by this story but as it progressed couldn’t help but agree with other people in the podcast that Tristan you were a little like a dog with a bone on wanting to be convinced of foul play by Father!
What made it really interesting in the end was the apparent theme being concluded all along, that Naomi was very overlooked and deserved the limelight.
Well done in achieving that acknowledgement at the tenth hour!

Thoroughly enjoyed this podcast. In fact, I loved it

Thoroughly enjoyed this podcast. In fact, I loved it. This is really a story about our identities, and beliefs, what forms and changes them, and how we we wish to present ourselves, or see ourselves. There are questions raised here that we all grapple with, about our human stories. I appreciated the openness from all the family members in sharing this, at times, raw (and charming) journey. And, yes, also this is a great ghost and detective story. Fantastic.

An entertaining podcast

I really enjoyed this podcast, it is well made and narrated. I found it a bit frustrating that the family were unwilling to face uncomfortable truths, even if it meant brushing over a potentially terrible injustice to family members Naomi and Morris. They can’t see what appears to be staring them in the face. To me the ‘bulletins’ seemed to be yet more diabolical premeditation and deception, not the evidence of innocence they were interpreted as.

First time I subscribed

Amazing! If we knew that all the ghost activities where to make Naomi know for all amazing work she’s done! At leat we know all this hard work has a reason. The reason is to spread Naomi’s work and legacy and it’s fells so good. Cheers to Naomi!!! Thank you Naomi for all yours work! Camila

History is a rolled up carpet you carry around with you

Stumbled on this great podcast on Wondery and thought, Ooh! A ghostly story for spooktober! But what I listened to was a family’s story of identity, and how the reality of a revered elders past can be clouded by investigative truth and how a forgotten victim can become an inspiration to successive generations. Examined by journalist Tristan Redman who is related through marriage to the story, the narrative unfolds through unbelievable connections and ghostly experiences in his youth. A really thought provoking look at how the linear nature of one’s history (ie my grandparent were this and did that) can be disrupted and what that means for our personal identity in the here and now. Highly recommend

It’s fine

It does seem a bit like a poorer version of another podcast but I suppose it is a great format so what can you do?! It’s a bit slow and hard to follow the stories and a lot of, ooh something happened but I couldn’t possibly tell you….. just tell us!!! Move it along! What did you see!
Anyway I’ll lap up anything to do with real life ghost stories so obviously I will listen, you’ve got me there!!! Looking forward to future episodes

Uncannily like another podcast
