Description

In "Hardcore History" journalist and broadcaster Dan Carlin takes his "Martian", unorthodox way of thinking and applies it to the past. Was Alexander the Great as bad a person as Adolf Hitler? What would Apaches with modern weapons be like? Will our modern civilization ever fall like civilizations from past eras? This isn't academic history (and Carlin isn't a historian) but the podcast's unique blend of high drama, masterful narration and Twilight Zone-style twists has entertained millions of listeners.

It is so well done, getting for free feels wrong . Dan Carlin could easily prepackaged every podcast into a book and would have been a bestseller . Epic series on different subjects with so much research put in , with a unique point of view will make you relive past times in such vivid colours. Hats off to Dan for creating the best history podcast ever , some call it the Mother of all podcasts ;)

Masterful and addictive.

In 2018 a hundred years had passed since the end of WW1. I felt somewhat embarrased of my ignorance on the subject- particualry since I am British and used to live in the area of France where the battles took place. But every time I tried to fill that knowedge gap by opening a history book, I'd be bored before long.
Then I discovered Hardcore History, and Blueprint for Armageddon specifically. Less than five minutes into the first episode and I was hooked.
Dan's delivery is so vivid, he brings history to life. And his knowledege is deep, too. I get the feeling that he could talk knowledgeable for days on a topic which he covers in just a few minutes in the podcast.
Blueprint for Armaggedon is a masterpiece.

This is an extraordinary good podcast. I'm not really "into" history but Mr Carling makes each story about the individuals involved and what they might be going through. A must listen.

I do history as an A level, and apart from reading about certain aspects of history, this podcast is probably one of the best thing I’ve ever listened too. Lovely voice, marvellous way of presenting historical knowledge through a calm and collective manor. Top notch.

Dan is an amazing orator and historian. His approach and journaling of WW1 is second to none. As an audible account of history it is untouchable.
Dan has such an amazing way of relating information and setting the scene that it gives you a perspective into history that before I would have never have achieved.
Amazing podcast. Amazing man. Amazing content.

In an age of distraction, it is easy to find something else to listen to, to see, to do. Dan Carlin never fails to keep me engaged, listening for hour after hour with his style of delivery and his perspectives on historical data. History they say is written by the victor and Dan’s opinions on the story from all sides, for me provides that added value!

Narrator has good general knowledge but the shows lack substance and are dull of supposition and what ifs. Gave up after 3. For those of you ranting that this is a fantastic historical podcast, then clearly you don’t know history and only want high-school level knowledge.

A friend suggested Dan Carlin’s “Celts” podcast to me and I was immediately hooked. Every month or so I have a 6-hour drive (each way) so I put that time to good use and get educated by DC.
So far I have listened to the whole of “Celts”, 5 of the 6 WWI episodes and the recent “Supernova” which is a thoroughly enjoyable discussion of Japanese military and cultural history.
Whilst lengthy the material and discussion is rarely dry, and DC does an admirable job of presenting issues from competing perspectives. He does ‘take sides’ but not always the ‘good guys’. Perhaps his most valuable trait is the way in which he provides insight and context of the time.
Carlin also publishes another podcast which I believe is focused on current affairs, so I will give that a go also.

This isn’t a boring school textbook version of history. Dan gives a really interesting, insightful and thought provoking take on the events. Although it takes ages for a new ep. to come out it’s a must listen when it does.

This is by far the best podcast out there. I don’t say that lightly: I’m an avid podcast listener with a wide interest, but Dan Carlin’s HH is just miles better than the competition. It’s enjoyable and teaches you a lot about world politics & history. I even paid for his older material on his website.
I particularly enjoyed the Mongols episode, but the most recent episode on japan is also amazing.
I wouldn’t be surprised if he does a TV documentary soon.
(Note that I’m not as big a fan of his politics show, it’s not the same standard as HH).

My Grandad loved history. He used to read and talk about it all the time. Somehow Dan Carlin makes understanding some of the huge concepts and events in History understandable. Making me feel a little closer to Grandad. Shame I never loved it (or understood it) until after he passed away...

I’ve listened to nearly every episode of Hardcore History and I’ve loved them all. I am going to keep this short, if you are interested in the slightest in history then this is a must for you. Made my commute to work bearable for 6 months solid. I have listened to some episodes multiple times. He’s simply brilliant. Dan you’re my hero.

More like excellent audio books exploring various historical subjects. If you’re new to Dan Carlin, I’d suggest trying a couple of different ones as they do vary in tone and depth. My personal favourites are :
1. The wrath of the khans (13th century Mongolian warlords)
2. Death throes of the republic (fall of the Roman Empire)
3. Prophets of doom (the muderous anabaptist uprising in Munster)

I’ve listened for some years now and Dan’s podcast ranges across a large canvas of fascinating chapters in history, drawing you in to the drama of the moment. Key figures are brought to life and he is fantastic at sketching the scene, pointing out the critical factors at play, and making it personal. He is quite happy to conjecture on personalities and issues that professional historians might shy away from, and every episode is deeply researched. A real pleasure for those who find adventure in our shared past.
