In this episode of Confronting the Line, Anne Peterson is joined by her friend and colleague Chris Shelton—former Scientologist and long-time advocate for people recovering from high-control groups.
Together, they unpack a recent online incident involving a Landmark supporter posting what appeared to be insider gossip, disinformation, and misinformation in response to Anne’s work and public commentary.
Rather than reacting emotionally or defensively, Anne and Chris slow the moment down and examine it through a wider lens:
How insider narratives are used to discredit criticsWhy gossip framed as “inside knowledge” can function as a control tacticThe difference between disagreement and organized reputational attackHow high-control groups train members—often unconsciously—to police dissentWhy critics are framed as “unstable” or “dishonest”How group loyalty turns into misinformationWhat healthy disagreement actually looks likeOr how cult-adjacent dynamics show up outside overt “cults”
Chris draws a direct comparison to Scientology’s well-documented practice known as Fair Game, a policy designed to silence, isolate, or undermine perceived enemies of the group. Anne explores whether similar patterns—even without formal policy—can emerge in other transformational or self-help organizations, including Landmark Worldwide.
This episode is not about attacking individuals. It is about pattern recognition, media literacy, and learning how to spot coercive behaviors before they escalate.
If you’ve ever wondered:
Why critics are framed as “unstable” or “dishonest”How group loyalty turns into misinformationWhat healthy disagreement actually looks likeOr how cult-adjacent dynamics show up outside overt “cults”This conversation offers language, context, and tools to think more clearly.RESOURCES & LINKS: Check out Chris’s channel Speaking of Cults    • Speaking of Cults
