SIDE EFFECTS: The ups and downs of mental health medication

Time: 28:08
In this episode of LATE BLOOMERS, Rich and Rox share their personal stories about mental health medication—the good, the bad, and the unexpectedly funny. Rich talks about his journey with antidepressants, including some awkward and memorable side effects, while Rox reflects on being prescribed antidepressants after losing her mum, how it shaped her grief, and why her sobriety influences her decisions around ADHD meds.
It’s an honest, relatable, and often hilarious discussion about the realities of mental health meds. Whether you’re on meds, off meds, or just curious, this episode dives into the messy truth of finding what works (or doesn’t) and embracing your own journey.
Quick disclaimer: We’re sharing our experiences, not medical advice. For real help, talk to someone with a stethoscope!

First podcast I’ve ever listened to

So I am very new (and behind the times) with podcasts. I follow your socials and love how honest you are in them. As a neurodivergent mum, in a ND household, I have loved joining in and listening to your podcast. Fun stories… helps us to relate things back to our own experiences. Thank you!!

I don’t leave reviews. Ever. So this is extra special.

Presented by two lovely people with warmth, brutal honesty (see episode 3), humour, love and positivity this podcast lives in a truly unique space for people who are finding their vibe with ADHD later in life.
Thanks for putting yourselves out there as the example of what could happen. Love it and keep it going!

Amazing people

You two are fabulous. I love the Instagram account(s!), and I’m pleased you’ve brought out the podcast. You have just been accompanying me during a tidying session, and I really don’t like those. I now know I have ADHD, and am waiting on a referral to get a diagnosis, but it’s pretty obvious. Apparently it was obvious to a lot of my friends, they just didn’t tell me, as when I’ve mentioned it they’ve been like “didn’t you know?!”. Thanks, friends!
I genuinely love the way you share information and insights from your own experiences, and normalise them, that’s so valuable! Now I’m off to listen to the next episode - keep them coming 🥰

Helps me understand myself

I’ve watched a lot of your videos over the years and I just want to thank you both. Rox, you’ve helped me identify my ADHD and how it doesn’t have to be just a bad thing and something that is a negative trait, and that I’m not broken- I just didn’t know my strengths. Rich, you’ve helped me identify things my partner does to accommodate me and ways he supports me without me even knowing. As someone who only really feels like they’ve found himself in his 30s, I really feel seen with this podcast. Thanks for everything you both do!

Loving it 👌🏻

My wife has recently discovered she has ADHD in her 40’s. I was diagnosed with Dyslexia in 2020 but they believed I was also showing traits of ADHD/possible Autism. Stumbled across you guys on TikTok around the time my wife started her journey of discovering why she was the way she has been her whole life. It’s really interesting to hear you talk about the micro aggressions as I have found that in the past that I’ve done exactly that! We now laugh about it, comment on both our side quests when we say we’re going to do something and end up doing something entirely different. Enjoying the podcast so far, just about to listen to Ep2 😊

Love this show

It wasn’t until your videos that I noticed I share so many of your traits I’m trying to address it although not formally diagnosed.
Love the first episode and can’t wait for more.

LOVE YOU TWO!!! Legends!

Loved this episode - so excited for the next one! I’m undiagnosed. Very recently realised at 39 (I’ll be 40 in 2025 😬) I’ve been living an extremely exhausting life pretending to be neuro typical. Finally realised why I’ve been finding parenting so hard. And running my awesome little craft biz Ray’s Room SUCH A MENTAL UPHILL BATTLE. Spent years and thousands of moola trying to understand and manage my mind better. Realising recently hit me like a moving train and now I’m in the middle of an identity crisis. I’m so grateful to have you guys I can relate to and support me working out who the actual eff I am!
Well done for everything you’ve achieved with this so far!! You’re an inspiration to me too! With love, Tash 💖

So comforting

Having recently been diagnosed with ADHD at the ages of 42, I’ve found Rox and Rich’s openness and honesty so helpful and hearing their experiences has made me feel very reassured. I love learning about the dynamics of their relationship and relate so much to that of me and my husband. First podcast was perfect xx

Life changing

As a forty year old whose wife has just been diagnosed ADHD and whose daughter has recently gotten her diagnosis, these two beautiful humans have been more helpful than any book, self help vid or guide.
At first I identified with Rich as the “Normal” dad, finding his way through the minefield of parenting and relationships in todays tech riddled landscape, and the more reels, shorts and vids I watch, the more I am starting to think my meltdowns at sudden changes to routine and plans laid for a while might not be grumpy old
Man syndrome!
Lu and I love all your content, long may it continue. And thankyou helping to educate on this hot topic

Love this

Great pod, guys. As a neurodivergent person in my 40’s full of ideas and still trying to carve out my creative passions into an income, this gives me the reassurance that if you work for it, you can achieve it. I also have an undiagnosed neurodivergent partner and diagnosed ADHD kid, so it’s nice to feel like I’m amongst friends in similar life experiences. Keep at it🙌🏼

Are they holding the key…

… in their own words they are the ones who messed up and want to share so we know we are not alone… and maybe we can learn from some of their mistakes. Thanks guys, looking forward to seeing how this goes… and Rox falling out of love with the podcast is fine… I will likely start missing episodes at some point too. That is not because what you guys have to say is not or no longer valid or valuable, just that my hyperfocus have changed… and if I learnt one thing from you it is that as long as it hurts no-one that is fine.

Inspired

My undiagnosed ADHD partner shared this with me and I’ve just listened to it and found it truly enlightening and inspiring. Clearly I love her and want to support her as best I can. This has helped me massively. It has resonated with me and our relationship which is the most important thing to me, actually that’s untrue, her happiness is the most important thing to me so to get a better understanding of her condition and how I can support her, challenge her, understand her and ultimately love her properly and be enough, this has opened my eyes, ears and heart in a huge way. You guys are outstanding. Keep it up. We need more of you out there .
