SKILL

Laurie Taylor explores the social construction of the notion of skilled work.
Time: 29:16
SKILL: Laurie Taylor explores the social construction of skilled and unskilled work. Far from being objective categories, Chris Warhurst, Professor & Director of the Institute for Employment Research at the University of Warwick, suggests a more complex history, one which has favoured male workers. They're joined by Natasha Iskander, Associate Professor of Urban Planning and Public Service at NYU, whose new study takes us into Qatar’s booming construction industry in the lead-up to the 2022 World Cup. She argues that the experiences of migrant workers reveals the way in which the distinction between the “skilled” and “unskilled” is used to limit freedom and personhood. Does skill make us human?

Every theatre show I go to is filled with women. Go to the national and try see a masculine man who hasn’t been dragged there. There are very few. Yet the woman proclaims on this that cultural is the preserve of a certain type of white man. Ha

I sure I listened to Laurie Taylor as a kid in the 1970s (unless I’m mistaken, but in any event a long time ago).
I’m very glad he’s still around and still a presenter very much worth listening to.

If you think the BBC is “a national treasure” you will like this programme. Indeed, I used to. But in fact it’s just typical BBC output - sneering at everything that isn’t left-liberal luvvie. I’ve had enough and am unsubscribing.
Sort it out, BBC!

Absolutely love this podcast, largely due to Laurie Taylor’s excellent , deft , funny and mellifluous delivery. There must be much skill in making it sound so easy and fun. More please!

Oh dear, it would be this week that I decide to post a review. The current episode—White Power in the US—was a bit of a train wreck and saved only by the polite forbearance of interviewee Kathleen Belew. By linking the entirely irrelevant Waco Siege to her work Laurie had either not read her research or, worse still, decided to ignore it in order to plug a BBC podcast about Waco. Prof. Belew gently corrected him but he appeared to double-down on the error. I’ve followed this show since its very beginnings and considered it one of the gems of Radio Four’s crown. I never thought of him as a curmudgeon until this episode, but I do now. Such a shame.

One step too far

Very left leaning, and I think that was always clear and not particularly a problem. However, the latest episode on “white privilege” was too much. It wasn’t just a left wing perspective, it was from the perspective of three hardcore ‘identitarians’, a niche hard left group of ideologues who selectively present evidence and anecdotes to paint the bleakest view of contemporary society as they can.
This particular episode not only presented this deeply divisive ideology unchallenged, our presenter himself “relished” in it. I tune I’m to learn new ideas, but propaganda is one step too far. I’ve chosen to unsubscribe.

Insightful, erudite and enlightening!

A must listen for anyone NOT tuned in to the Guardianista vibe. The odd economy related stuff can be hilarious. Also some real eye openers on where your research tax gold disappears.

Generally superb and thought provoking, with Laurie's warm, learned and slightly witty delivery...however, the guests almost always pepper their conversations with "absolutely" when they just mean "yes"..or start each sentence with "so"..it seems to be a Radio 4 thing and once you notice it, it's intensely irritating. But I don't blame Laurie for this, although it does sometimes detract from a wonderfully insightful programme.

As a confirmed hard science fan I should find the softer subjects less interesting. But Laurie Taylor brings such enthusiasm, insight and wit to every topic that this really is a highlight of the podcast week for me. Highly Recommended!

laurie's programme is a joy to listen to whether like me you were an undergraduate social scientist, more closely linked to the world of academic social science or just an interested listener - having it on podcast has made it accessible: it was impossible to tune in at 4:30 on Wednesdays!

Sociology gets a bad press -- who wants to listen to a show about that? Well too bad, if you don't then you'll miss the most intellectually engaging show on British radio. Professor Taylor is a great presenter: lucid, curious and humane. And very funny! Thinking Aloud refreshes the parts other programmes leave behind...
