The Saxon Shore Way in Kent

The Saxon Shore Way in Kent

A group of friends walk from Hamstreet to Appledore in Kent.
Time: 24:17
Colleen Thirkell and her husband Richard have been walking stretches of the Saxon Shore Way with their friends Bev and John. In autumn 2020 Colleen fell seriously ill with a rare reaction to a flu jab. She was unable to walk and spent months in hospital. But she has slowly recovered and part of her rehabilitation has been to get out walking with her friends again. They invited Clare to walk one of the final stages of the 168 mile route they have been walking together when time has allowed. The ramble takes them from the village of Hamstreet to Appledore on the edge or Romney Marsh. Along the way they talk about their love of walking together as a group and how Colleen's recovery was aided by the thought of being outdoors with friends and family again.

I won’t use the BBC Sounds app, tried it and found it hard work. Why, though, has Ramblings stopped appearing on Apple’s podcasts? Love the program

There is so much good about the Ramblings podcast that it is hard to know where to start but a good place would be to say it is just an absolute joy to listen to. Clare Balding is an excellent presenter who always manages to bring the best out of her guests. She has the most light touch when dealing with sensitive or challenging subjects but without ever losing the impact. I always learn so much whether it be about a topic or a guest but more than that for those 30 minutes I am walking the countryside with them. Simply glorious.

Claire Balding and Ramblings is I’ve just said, the best. Been listening for years on Radio 4. She’s great at describing where they are, talking to the guests. Love it.

I enjoy listening to this program, and have been doing so for many years. However the ‘new’ BBC sounds advertisement at the beginning of each episode is very loud, and ruins a relaxing listen.

Look forward to new episodes

I adore listening to Ramblings and have been introduced to so many inspirational people and wonderful landscapes along the way. Clare is such a warm and engaging narrator, proper national treasure! Just listened to the latest with Alice Roberts. What a pairing they make, I think we need to hear more!

Having to walk alone and maintain social distancing is a bit lonely and I can’t even take my chocolate lab out as she decided to start her first season one week into lock down. So I came up with the idea of putting my earphones in and listening to Ramblings while I walk and it sort of feels like I’m actually out with a group. So Thanks Love the podcast. 😁😘

Thank you for guiding us through what sounds like a fabulous walk and with an added bonus of listening to your folk song in the chapel. Totally captivating, well done Claire, Jay and Jon. I’ve visited this area before but the walk certainly makes me want to come back and delve deeper into the area’s history and folklore.

I’m late to this party. I’m familiar with a couple of the areas that Clare has rambled and downloaded those first. Having listened to them I immediately downloaded more. I love her descriptions along the way and also the varied selection of people who walk and talk with her.

I love listening when I’m stuck inside either at work or when doing jobs at home. Gives me the enthusiasm to get out & about with my wife & dogs. It’s also very interesting to hear other people’s reasons for their activities & what they gain from them.

I usually listen to one of these in the bath in the evening and it’s always interesting to hear the life stories of people that are on the walks. And it’s interesting to hear about places that you know or that you’d like to visit. Just a very chilled out listen. Good for unwinding.

I have downloaded every single episode available and am currently going through them at a rate of knots. I listen to them whilst driving to and from work every day and I just love the way that they transport you to some of Britain's best walking spots, as well as letting you "eavesdrop" on some very interesting conversations ;-) I can't rate this Podcast highly enough, and I reckon it would make a brilliant TV series.

I really like CB's style. Interested, humouruse and relaxed but never patronising. Really a great counterpoint to the image of the UK projected often. So many interesting people with a little patch of the rich tapestry of the UK. Brilliant.

Despite not being able to see the countryside or take in the country air - this ramblers podcast worked really well for me. The one I listened to was about parents taking their children and buggies on a ramble in Wales. It was interesting and informative and showed just what groups were doing to make rambling more accessible. Clare was an enthusiastic host and I look forward to the next edition.
