Northern Ireland's Environmental Future

Northern Ireland's Environmental Future

Tom Heap asks if Northern Ireland's new environmental ambitions will become reality?
Time: 27:39
In Northern Ireland peace and prosperity have long been prioritised over environmental protection. Tom Heap asks if a new generation can push nature and wildlife up the agenda.
For decades a blind eye was often turned to suspect developments in natural areas and breaches of pollution regulations. A more recent upsurge in large-scale dairy, pig and poultry farming has added to the burden on Northern Ireland's once green and pleasant land. New laws to fight climate change and a new subsidy regime for agriculture give Northern Irish politicians and regulators the chance to put things right. With the help of BBC Northern Ireland Environment Correspondent, Louise Cullen, Tom Heap considers the issues in advance of the Stormont Assembly elections.

A speciesist attack on grey squirrels

This programme fails to question the anthropocentric and speciesist campaign against grey squirrels despite:
‘There is no evidence that grey squirrels aggressively chase out red squirrels or interfere with their mating behaviour. Nor do greys eat hazel nuts before the reds – both species will feed on them while green in north of England. Furthermore, both species have the same breeding potential.’ Review of red squirrel conservation activity in northern England (NECR019), p8, Natural England , 2009.
Why are grey squirrels blamed for coin-sized scars on beech trees when bypasses, runways, HS2, drift mines ravage ancient forests?
Why are they not given credit for growing trees by the million by planting acorns, hazelnuts and beech mast?
Why should grey squirrels be interfered with because of a perceived problem caused by human interference in the past?

The ‘Costing the Earth’ team never fail to present a well researched and balanced window onto the environmental issues of the day and importantly, how they might shape our future. Accessible, informative and relevant. This is one of my ‘go to’ environmental podcasts, more please!

Restarted listening to podcasts and with excitement thought I would tune into Costing the Earth again after a few gap years. Within minutes I realised this was just another piece of anti-Brexit rhetoric and anti- British propaganda from the BBC. Sorry, turned off. Roll on the day when the licence fee is cancelled.

BBC, if it is required, please provide this team with a larger budget to help produce more shows. Love them.

In general I do enjoy this podcast, it deals with important environmental issues that we need to be made more aware of , how ever I am concerned that there was no mention of how much water is used in the farming agriculture sector. People need to made aware of the devastating impacts this causes and simply by reducing your meat consumption to only a few times a month is something everyone can start right away .

Fascinating and well-crafted episode that lifts the lid on a little-known area of environmental impact. In general this is a great series, with well-researched material and the latest findings. The BBc have the advantage of smaller podcasters in that their name and reputation can get them conversations others can't achieve. There are moments when it could be more challenging, and sometimes the presentation is a bit too smooth, but this is a great podcast/radio show worth tuning into for anyone who takes an active interest in our interaction with ecosystems globally and locally.

Not challenging enough

The interviewer is not challenging enough to the interviewees. The drug companies ,Natural England etc.
We have a climate catastrophe and the established ways need to be seriously challenged.

Awesome content! If you listen closely those for GMO’s only “believe” in the benefits of these crops... my personal gripe with GMO’s is that there’re no human trails... oh wait! We are the human trail...

Having listened to this podcast right through, I am amazed that the production team has forgotten that Northern Ireland is part of the United Kingdom.
After discussing England, Scotland then Wales, we were taken to Ireland. Please try to get it right next time

I love these podcasts. They inspire me (every morning on my commute to work) to learn more about reducing the impact that humans have on the earth. Not sure what I'm going to do when the series finishes and I've listened to them all!

Informative and interesting but I was frustrated by the sound level difference between the live recording (loud) and the commentary (quiet), I had to constantly adjust the volume. This distracted me from enjoying the actual content, two stars.
