Good concept, and execution getting better
Really, it's a nice idea: Get a couple of comedians from the USA and a couple from the UK, then pit them against each other in a a few rounds of cheery banter. Have Jesse Thorn host the whole darn thing, have interesting special guests, and make it a decent hour-long podcast to give everyone enough time to get into it. What could go wrong?
Well, being a US / UK dual national with a fair amount of experience in both lands, I feel I'm in a reasonable position to say that it IS a little slanted towards American ears. You get occasional moments when the UK panellists, and probably more UK listeners, are simply unable to respond to anything being said, simply because they haven't a clue what any of it means. And that's a shame, because the guests they've had so far - from both sides of the pond - have all been very good.
Of course, the fact that much of our respective cultures seems unintelligible to each other is what this whole show is about, but it does stray beyond 'fun' towards 'meaningless' a little too often. It's getting better, though: They've now got a UK writer on board, so the balance of comprehensibility should improve in coming episodes.
Coming out only once a month I think it'll take a while for the show to settle into itself, but with a few more shows under their belts I think International Waters could become as reliably enjoyable as many of the other MaxFun productions. Definitely worth a listen. Give it time to grow on you, and within itself.
Oh, but could the logo designers have a look at the Union Flag they've done? Not right at all.
