Description

‘I have written a blasphemous book’, said Melville when his novel was first published in 1851, ‘and I feel as spotless as the lamb’. Deeply subversive, in almost every way imaginable, Moby-Dick is a virtual, alternative bible – and as such, ripe for reinterpretation in this new world of new media. Out of Dominion was born its bastard child – or perhaps its immaculate conception – the Moby-Dick Big Read: an online version of Melville’s magisterial tome: each of its 135 chapters read out aloud, by a mixture of the celebrated and the unknown, to be broadcast online, one new chapter each day, in a sequence of 135 downloads, publicly and freely accessible.

An easy way to encourage the timid/ wary to enjoy what for me is one of the greatest books. I say books rather novels as novel would never describe what 'Moby Dick' is. It is sui generis. Enjoy the ecentricities. Cope with occasional tedium. But above all enjoy the language. This is the novel Shakespeare could have written or the committee that translated the King James version. One small complaint. I hope Tilda will not be the only woman. But why the first chapter ? 'Call me Ishmael'. The narrator identiifies himself and sets the tale in motion. Must be a male voice, surely ?
From chapter 37 I have a problem downloading to iTunes ????

Stunning Work

A real joy to listen to each day; I find Simon Callow's rendition of "The Sermon" to be an entirely haunting and stirring reading of one part of the whole magnificent work. I look greatly forward to each new instalment - in particular, that forthcoming reading by David Attenborough.

Excellent.

I've always wanted to read this but the word 'boring' seemed to appear with startling frequency so this is perfect. Tilda Swinton's opening chapter is superb and I'm very much enjoying Chad Harbach's one at the moment.

Chapter 3

Chapter 3 cuts short for me. I've tried many ways of downloading without joy. Anyone else?

At sunrise

Great listening whilst walking the dog each morning. I may have to skip the Cameron chapter though.

Great idea!

Based on one chapter alone, it seems like this should be required listening for the next five months. A daily dose of Moby Dick; what more could you ask for?
