Description

Three nerds discussing tech, Apple, programming, and loosely related matters.

Apple Podcasts: Customer Reviews

Ugh

Needs to be shorter. Needs less Marco (at least he needs to stop laughing at his own jokes so much, and doing all the ad reads which makes me subconsciously hate him just because he is the “ads guy”). Refresh the ending song as the show never ends after it anyway and it’s been there forever and you all hate Twitter now. These days I just use chapters to listen to one or two bits I’m interested in. I hate it when they talk politics, who cares? Let me escape into my tech podcast I don’t care about your virtue signalling.

Fun and laid-back

Always a delight to hear Siracusa. Marco can be a bit tiring when he's ranting about stuff he doesn't know about, but that's what the chapter skip buttons are for!

Oh dear. It has all gone wrong!

For years this has been a favourite podcast. But I suddenly realised that I can no longer bear the constant whinging, whining tone and attitude that now suffuses the opinions of these three guys. No longer balanced or perspicacious or subtle or interesting; just populist, boring and predictable views. So I am moving on. Time to find the new people who do what these three used to do. Pity.

Top Gear for Tech

Listening is genuinely the highlight of my podcast week. The three presenters work great together and I look forward to their thoughts on the Apple news. I’d love to buy them a beer sometime. #bucketlist

Insufferable at times but still fun

I can see why people say these guys live in a bubble quite removed from the real world in many cases, but it's still a fun show and worth the investment. The tone deaf nature of them sometimes is often what makes it weirdly fun.

Painful

Marco Arment is definitely the star of the show, with his general knowledge of tech being great and him actually being interesting to listen to. John is alright but does ramble.
Casey is who ruins it for me. He is extremely liberal to the point where he trips over himself trying not to offend anyone for anything. It’s cringeworthy to listen to. For example, he actually suggested that all women choose to wear a hijab. Tell that to the women of Iran or those who were forced to convert by Isis under punishment of death.

Very good

An excellent tech podcast from an Apple perspective. Sometimes it gets a bit techy for my taste, but the three different characters work well together. John Siracusa being the star of the show.

My favourite podcast

Great podcast. The hosts are well-informed and the discussions are usually interesting and entertaining. Recommended.

Not as good as it was

Used to be my favourite podcast. Nowadays it's just ok.
Siracusa is fantastic, as always.
Casey is good, although I wish he wouldn't finish every sentence with a disclaimer about how it's his opinion and it works for him and how the listener may have different opinions and how we don't need to send him feedback.
Marco just wants you to know how rich he is. (Though he'd never admit it.)

Listen to years, but enough is enough

I going to have to give up on this. I've been listen to it from day 1 and would have given it 5 stars in the past but the moaning is getting too much. No problem with them being critical ... but being constantly critical and repetitive does not make a good podcast. They need to learn when they have made their point and stop. The show is almost 2 hours long, so could be much shorter. It's just not a good use of podcast time even at 2x and smart speed. Perhaps if they tried to stick to 1 hour it would be better.

Please ditch Casey

He used to be ok but hearing him say coloured iphones are more important than a Mac Pro and his UTTERLY PAINFUL explanation of the Ms Surface Studio "Imac connected to a mac mini with an apple pencil and a puck mouse extented" jesus christ this is just awful did he even look at it????????????

Good but when the start complaining

Used to be very good, but lately when there is little news they get stuck complaining, and it's not fun listening to two hours of complaints. Bumping off my high priority listening for a break.

Good, but perhaps not as good as it should be

It's such a shame that a potentially great podcast falls a little short. Although the hosts are all good the show doesn’t quite take off due to the need to constantly follow the latest complaints or hysteria surrounding Apple that particular week. It get’s quite negative, and becomes a bit of an ordeal to listen too.
I wish they could do the whole show like they eventually do in the brilliant "After show" section where they get back to a more relaxed and natural conversation and less "summing up"... (and the “Hypercritical” toaster reviews are a highlight of the entire internet!)

Knowledgable + Funny + Articulate = Value!

A real pleasure to listen to their take on tech events, accidental or not!
Informed commentary at its best.

I’m a huge fan of Siracusa and Marco, but Casey - you make this podcast. An excellent podcast that I recommend as essential for any podcast apps.

Excellent Podcast

Fun to listen too and super clever. Good to hear your guys views on all things, whatever they be. Objective, well thought out yet spontaneous, quite the combo. Good luck and thank you.

Hard to get into, but worth it

(My first version of this review mistakenly rated it 3 stars instead of 4, I have resubmitted it and deleted the previous version).
If you like discussion on Apple and related technologies, and don’t mind the long running time, this is very worthy of a subscription. The three hosts are all knowledgable in their areas and bring a different viewpoint to the show, ensuring debate and discussion. Don’t be fooled though - each episode isn’t 100% serious, with lots of funny and lighthearted moments.
The in-jokes and references may make it hard to get into, but if you’re interested in Apple and the tech world, then any podcast with John Siracusa is worth listening to. Having both Marco Arment and Casey Liss as well just provides the cherry on the top of the cake.
I do have to say though, that the running time came sometimes come close to 3 hours, and with no chapter markers this makes it a bit of a chore to listen to in one sitting. You’re better off listening to it in manageable chunks for the longer episodes. Overall however, thoroughly recommended.

Content x Voice

A tech show where you get such interesting discussions from varied perspectives would be worth a listen anyway, but the presenters are all such amiable and characterful guys that you may soon find yourself waiting for each episode with a sense of Christmas anticipation.

Great podcast but with slight annoyance

Love this podcast but who's the one with the fast high pitched voice .
As soon as he tries to stamp his point he gets faster and faster and more squeaky . Try listening to him on the overcast podcast app . Almost un- listenable .
Make your point but not, out shout your argument with high pitched speed talking .

Fun and informative

Probably the best technology podcast in the world. John is critical and hilarious, Marco brings the perspective of someone who actually ships, and Casey has the voice of the corporate drone to provide perfect balance. It is clear that the hosts are having a good time and enjoy each others company. Can't recommend it highly enough.

Not suitable for listening at 2am

Listening to ATP is one of the entertainment highlights of my week.
Over time I feel like the dynamic between the hosts has just got better and the show continues to become more refined.
I finally got round to writing this review after constant chuckles at John's little jokes at Marco/Caseys expense this evening, waking up the members of my household.
It put into focus that this show has everything for me - tech commentary, in depth analysis and laughs.

Spoilt by Cassey

I've tried my hardest, but I can't listen anymore.... I love listening to Marco, he's an intelligent, articulate, opinionated host who's not afraid to speak his mind and Siracusa needs no introduction in the geek, podcast world but Cassey spoils it... He offers nothing and am convinced that he's only a co-host through his friendship with the other two... If Marco's soon to be released Overcast App has a Casey skip button I will re-subscribe. I really have tried to persevere but cannot listen to someone I have no respect for...

Love it. Mostly

I think my perfect tech podcast would be Siracusa with someone knowledgable enough to play a good devil’s advocate to his views.
This isn’t that.
But it’s a step in the right direction, and I look forward to every episode.

Accidentally listened. Enjoyed.

People need to calm down on hating on specific hosts. I think the 3 balance pretty nicely, all have different points of view, which makes the conversation more interesting. Casey isn't bad.

Also, how can anyone not love Casey?

My favourite podcast

I look forward to every episode of ATP. It's the only podcast that I play as soon as it arrives on my phone. I enjoy the interaction between the three presenters, they balance each other really well.

Marco is the one who does the sponsors
John has the deep voice, he is epic!
Cassey (auto correct changed it to cassette ) is the other one with the gravely voice

An excellent, and improving, podcast

With Marco and John it was always going to be a decent podcast, and it is. What is somewhat a revelation in the last 5 or 6 episodes is how the third presenter, Casey Liss, has come to the fore. He has taken up the role of cat herder, and his clever coaxing and quipping keeps the established personalities on track. I wouldn’t want to see either Marco or John leave, but for me it’s Casey who has made this podcast a great one.
Gruber’s Talk Show would benefit from the focus Casey brings.
Ah yes, they talk about Macs and iOS and stuff. Jolly good, always topical.

Worth listening to about 1/2 the time

This is an update on my previous review and i have changed my mind to some degree.
Hals the time this is a very interesting podcast. When the three participants talk about and comment on the industry it can be insightful and useful comment that informs. However about 1/2 the time they wander of on conversation about their cars, families, parental relationships and god knows what. Oh yes acorns falling on Siracusa's car. At this point i have a strong desire to chew through the earpiece cable to escape but, later they may comment on something that does actually impact on me so i stay listening.
Perhaps if it's a slow news week they could just make a shorter podcast?

Almost there

John Siracusa means this podcast is awesome from the start. Enjoy listening to Casey however the show could do with far less Marco (maybe none of him to be honest; makes Dan look like a superstar in comparison)

2013-04-27

What more?

The pleasure of hearing John Siracusa wax lyrical without the threat of research burnout is fantastic to behold. It's a genuine pleasure, also to hear him working without notes. As a huge fan of his previous work on Hypercritical, I'm happy to see a more relaxed, yet no less insightful John at work. Marco, is as others have described, less annoying here and also works better for being more off the cuff. He's more vulnerable and as a result more likeable and his friendship with Casey affects him similarly making this podcast, despite it's obvious flaws, the best tech podcast around for mac geeks at this moment in time. I really hope Casey comes out of himself, however.
