Lovely like always I though it was going to not be good but it is absolutely outstanding like the H.R.
Also could you make a series about another empire maybe Byzantine Empire or Chinese or Ottoman or even the Persian or Assyrian .

Later season rammed with boring, irrelevant filler

Im annoyed because I was loving this series but alas I’m at my last nerve. As the seasons go on the podcast seems to be driven by ad revenue generated per episode rather than delivering a clear and concise narrative of the events of any given revolution. Episodes are full of fluff and filler. For the Russian Revolution you need to get near episode 30 before you actually start learning about the Russian revolution. If he treated season 1 the English Civil as he treated season 10 he would have started with King Cnut, gone on a random tangent about Norman peasant life before arriving at The Stuarts in episode 40, adding long pointless profile of people entirely removed from the events of the civil war and revolution. It’s extremely annoying.

Brilliant History Podcasting!

Having listened to every one of Mike Duncan‘s history podcasts, right from the beginning of history of Rome up until this final episode of revolutions – I can only say I’ve enjoyed every single one of them immensely. They have been very informative. The context of the ancient history of Rome really helped me understand the foundations of our society and economy. But then going through all the revolutionary processes that created the great Atlantic revolution cycle, really gave a fantastic insight into the birth of modernity, and the reasons why it all is so conflicted even now. Perhaps especially now. I’m really looking forward to the next series and hearing those conversations.
Thanks so much Mike. You are an absolute star!

OMG it’s finally over 😢 I’ve listened to Revolutions for years, and I don’t know what I’ll do now! This is an amazing podcast so while it’s now over, if you’re new to Mike Duncan, there is 9-years worth to catch-up on - give it a try, you’ll never regret a minute

Started on a friend’s recommendation randomly at the Deutscher Werkbund, then rewound all the way back to Cromwell, then all the way to Soviet Russia. Haiti is a particularly highlight. Now on ep50 of Rome. Hats off to Mike Duncan. What a star.

I am always enthralled by your deep understanding of history. However, this little cliff hanger has wetted my appetite for what is to come. It excells the previous documentaries of the French revolutions. I've bought and read the book and listened to the commentary of your French sojourn. This script just exudes the living daylights out of me. I wish you the very best in your next ventures to add colour to the screen and shall look forward to any and everything you do expanding the knowledge of our species in the most entertaining manner.

In episode 56, s10 the author claims that in 1913 Austria-Hungary pushed for the creation of a state called “Albania”, only to stop the Serbs from getting a port in the Adriatic sea. It is well-knwon that Albania proclaimed independence from the Ottomans long before whereas the Albanians have been natives in the Balkans before the Slavs arrival. The author seems to suggest its a made up country, without doing some basic research first.

Late to the game but have enjoyed series 1 very much and now I’m on series 2 and we’re (yes, I’m a Brit) about to lose the colonies. Nightmare. Really well told and very enjoyable!

Just got to the end of season 1. Rather embarrassingly, as Thomas Jefferson (sort of) put it after visiting Worcester: I, an Englishman, have needed to learn an awful lot about my own country’s fight for personal liberty and I have learnt it from from this series. Presented by an American, the majestic irony! Thank you sir, it is a wonderful contribution to all our learning and I look forward to the remaining series with eager anticipation.

I’ve just stumbled on Series 1 about the English Civil Wars and it is absolutely brilliant. The author has a cheery but authoritative style and he manages to present a complex, and admittedly fairly dry, historical narrative in an engrossing and amusing style.

Uncompromising. A brilliant insight into areas of history that you thought you knew about but didn’t. More importantly, the fastidious attention to detail is wonderful and gives context to the way we live today.

As a teenager studying and French Revolution, this came recommended by a friend. I have since graduated from the fall of the Ancien Regime etc, to Duncan’s commentary on the 1830 July Revolution, and the Springtime of the Peoples. Engaging and, at times, hilarious (‘a gaggle of Mandelas’ made me laugh out loud), I can barely exaggerate to what extent I recommend listening tuning in.

Spectacular podcast

This is a brilliant historical podcast that is both informative and accessible, while avoiding being patronising. I started by using the French Revolution section of the podcast for A level history revision, but have since begun listening to the rest for entertainment. The presenter has a charming voice and is very good at simplifying complex events. Overall an amazing podcast I cannot recommend enough.

Hands down the best podcast I’ve ever listened to

I once heard that the French Revolution was the most influential historical event on modern politics. I’m not sure this is true, but it made me want to learn more about that revolution regardless, and I’m a keen podcast listener, so I thought I’d learn through the medium of podcasts. That’s what brought me here, and I’m delighted it did. These podcasts are the most consistently entertaining and interesting of them all - covering fascinating historical events in a way that is somehow both concise and detailed. All told by a funny and charismatic (and clearly well informed) narrator, I’m afraid of the day that I finish catching up, and can no longer binge these. And that day is coming soon, because binging these podcasts is very very easy.

Looking forward to the Russian Revolution(s) after the dull Latino and the mid-century European political upheavals! English Civil War and French Revolution were great but Mike should have focused on the big ones! At least we have the Russian and China’s Mao to look forward to......

Mike Duncan takes long and complicated topics and condenses them into a concise, easily accessible and extremely entertaining yet very thorough journey through the turbulent revolutions of the past. It is detailed but is paced well as to remain extremely entertaining. It is audio book quality and I highly recommend a listen, the series on Haiti, France and the revolutions of 1848 are all especially well done

Factual, well researched and interesting.

Always enjoy it!

If you are interested in history, politics, or even the vaguest bit curious about the history of the modern world and how it came to be, you should listen to this podcast!
Mike is an entertaining, accessible and thorough guide through the great revolutions. Starting with the English Civil War and American Revolution, on to the gripping marathon series on the French Revolution(s), this podcast also highlights some less well-trodden histories, with fascinating comprehensive series on the Haitian revolution and most recently, the failed Paris Commune of 1871. The style is fresh, but detailed, and I come away with a much better understanding of the events, figures, and consequences of these important chapters in world history, social and political.
There’s still much more to come: I can’t wait for the series on the Mexican and Russian Revolutions.

I’m giving 5 stars because I think his style, attention to details and research is excellent. The podcasts are comprehensive and cover subjects well.
My only criticism is I think that his ideological bias shows up from time to time, which as a left winger myself I find slightly annoying.
Despite this I felt his view on the French Revolution is excellent, objective and doesn’t fall into the usual poor stereotype of accusing Robespierre of being an maniacal evil figure.
My only other last negative point is Duncan described Gracchus Barbeuf as an influence on Lenin, which I disagree with, Leninist theory being distinctly anti-Blanquist, instead being syndicalist and seeing revolution from the working class with a vanguard party not instead of the working class.
In conclusion though,
Well
Worth
Listening to.

Mike cements a reputation acquired as a top class researcher/raconteur with his History of Rome podcast by following up with an invaluable look at how political ideas and movements - once thought of as "new" but often integral to everyday life - took shape across Europe, the Americas & beyond.
Great and often ignored subjects are brought to life in the creator's trademark inquisitive, detailed and well laid out style.
Am loving the new book, too
