65-year-old Marilyn Gandert worked for the U.S. Postal Service for over 30 years. She was a solitary woman who lived alone and was getting ready to sell her house and retire. Tragically, Marilyn was never able to enjoy her retirement. In January of 2018, her mangled and charred remains were found on a backroad in Rio Rancho, New Mexico. Someone had brutally beaten and stabbed Marilyn to death, covered her in gasoline, and burned her body.

Sword and Scale is a true crime podcast covering the dark underworld of crime and the criminal justice system’s response to it. The first episode launched January 1st, 2014 and feature stories of murder, abduction, rape, and even more bizarre forms of crime. Everything from 911 calls to court testimony, interviews with victims and sometimes with perpetrators give listeners a 360 degree look at the seedy underbelly of human nature and so-called civilized society. Told from an everyman's point of view, Sword and Scale goes beyond the news clips and the sensationalist headlines to hold up a mirror to the audience and ask, "Is it us versus them? Or are we just like 'them' too?" Sword and scale proves that the worst monsters are real.

The host is insufferable, a big man baby. Constantly crying about his listeners. Hey Mike, I like the stories but I wish you weren’t in the show.

Awesome podcast

Only just started listening to true crime and heard about this one from the Osbournes Podcast and I have to say it’s awesome! Mike you’re amazing and agree with you completely on everything I have heard so far. I’m working my way back thru the catalogue and loving it. Love the structure and the interviews and the audio recordings. Keep em coming guys. Great work.

I came back

I left this podcast for a while, then decided to start listening again. Glad I did - it’s quality and I’m enjoying the narration - Mike is a very gifted speaker and storyteller.

Awful music

Generally good cases and content, and well done. But I cannot stand the music at the start and and how long it goes on for / it fading in and out with narration. Doesn’t suit the tone and content of the podcast.

Listener since 2013

I have listened to this show during its early days, where podcasts isn’t even as huge as it is now. Where we don’t have to subscribe to listen. I like the simplicity back then, no weird theatrics and no unnecessary opinions. Just a good old objective narration of a true crime story. I found it off putting now, inserting personal views and agendas here and there. And about the swearing… I don’t like to hear it randomly on a podcast that has to be objective. I swear like a sailor and I don’t mind people swearing every sentence… but on a podcast like this… just no.

Sword and scale

Iv listened to sword and scale for well over a year now possible longer. This pod cast for myself is amazing. I love mats voice kinda relaxing. I love the crimes I listen too, a lot of my friends think I’m crazy but I love anything that’s real life. I’m saddened for the murder and for the family’s but it’s real life crime and that’s the part I love. When I’m cleaning it keeps me going. 10/10 from the uk England … Well done Mat and the team well done from me … Sam

Great content. Not so sure about Mike

Some truly fascinating content unearthing some of America's foulest crimes and lowest human forms. Unflinching in telling the stories of some horrific and genuinely disturbing crimes. My only concern is the presenter who although reads very clearly is somewhat of a narcissist. It's kinda all about him for some reason. Can't quite put my finger on it but he's unsettling- kinda reflects the content. Maybe there will be a show about him one day....?

The host prejudice and xenophobia against people he doesn’t like is worrying, surprised Apple still host this podcast. He plays it as woke, apparently this word gives him the right to generalise insults.

Weird narration style. He can fit nine… pauses… in a sentence

The pauses… in sentences… they… do my effing head… in.

Likes playing calls from fans telling him how great he is. Likes insulting his fans during episodes. Likes the sound of his own voice. Shame because i could live with that, given the stories themselves are well told. Except… for the pauses… which are… frequent.

So glad I stumbled across this podcast, the stories are so interesting, horrific in places but well told, yes Mike Boudet does comment with snide remarks but these people are scum so well deserved. I think you do an amazing job, keep up the good work, sadly there will always be stories to tell as the world and humans are cruel but these stories need to be told - so thank you

Best presenter, most well put together and interesting crime podcast in my opinion. Love the disgusting dubstep music choices, bizarre but hilarious. Enjoyed the Lore snipe, very funny!

Ignore the smear campaign of negative reviews

There has obviously been a coordinated campaign of leaving negative reviews for this podcast as all those reviews were posted during the same timeframe and say virtually the same thing. Yes, the host is opinionated, but it’s his show and the storytelling is excellent. Among the best true crime podcasts around.

Great content - host problematic

The stories and content of this podcast are incredibly interesting.

I am usually able to ignore the sarcastic, aggressive opinions of the host but I feel that these opinions are becoming more and more problematic and concerning with his passive aggressive, generalisations. (Which has lead me to write this review)

Some of his inaccurate opinions, in the wrong ears, could insight hate crime with people who are a little more impressionable. (Which is rather ironic with the subjects that are being covered)

I also have to skip the section at the end, where he includes phone calls from people saying how much they love him. It just makes me cringe so much! (they must be delusional)

Like no other

While I may agree to an nth degree with Frankie regarding Mr Boudet’s political views slipping into his narration from time to time, I absolutely admire his strength, stamina and skills in reminding us all, monsters are very real. Every episode is so well written, edited and produced, as to overshadow any occasional differences in views on inconsequential matters compared to his topics. And any matter, Mr Boudet brings his talents, dedication and brio. Five stars.

I think Sword and Scale is up there with Casefile as one of the best true crime podcasts out there. Well researched, well written, atmospheric. I don’t always agree with Mike’s views (although I often do), but I like that he’s not afraid to say what he thinks. It’s refreshing in a world where most podcasters feel the need to give “trigger warnings” every 5 minutes.

Oh, and SAS got me into Dubstep. Love it 🎧

The episodes have gone downhill Try crime Junkie or anatomy of murder 100 million Times better podcasts, better produced and narrated with proper knowledge this guys an amateur and wants us to pay money, no change mate, your crazy. Sorry but I have to go…

I too used to absolutely love this podcast… Unfortunately I can now no longer get past the very dislikable Mike who is coming across more and more as just a very nasty, unpleasant person. Even the music sounds aggressive!

These crime podcasts talk about some of the worst human beings in existence and the hosts usually bring some form of light relief… however the negativity emanating from Mike makes this one no longer enjoyable in any way : (

If that doesn’t get in your way? This is the best murder p0rn cast out there.

As an audio engineer? I absolutely appreciate the well recorded casts, and mix / balance of the episodes. As a confessed true crime addict? I appreciate the stories and the way each one unfolds.

The show is excellent in terms of story telling, facts and editing.

The host clearly has a chip on his shoulder and has a grudge against the world. His arrogance and self-centredness oozes out with his unwarranted opinions. It’s almost like the show has changed from sword and scale to the Mike show.

The music at the beginning is a crime against my ears too.

Ruined by the host

I used to love this podcast but I feel like Mike has become too big for his proverbial boots. This has become The Mike Boudet Show and seems to be a platform to spout controversial and inflammatory remarks that are based on little to no fact. It is really off putting which is a shame because Mike has a great voice and a real talent for story telling.

Finally the new host is back!

I used to LOVE this podcast...when Mike left, the other voices presenting...well it just didn’t work so I stopped listening . Now Mike is back I can give this 5 stars! The way in which he tells the stories is engaging and professional...Can’t wait for the next episode already! Don’t know why people are so judgey on him. If he didn’t host this podcast I wouldn’t listen ☺️
