Excellent
I first heard about this when the Guardian newspaper recently listed it among the 50 best podcasts, and it sounded right up my street. It is. And I’ve been listening to them in order ever since, often to the neglect of new episodes of my usual podcasts.
Because I don’t want to sound like a shill, I’ll point out the negatives first. Writer/producer/narrator Karina Longworth’s decision to do impersonations of celebrities is misguided at best - they’re not good, cheapen somewhat the words spoken, and take this listener out of the moment. I understand that this decision may have been taken to add a little flavour, but it doesn’t need it. Just use your own voice please! Doesn’t have to be an intrusive “quote-end quote” deal. Your audience is smart enough to cope with that.
There’s quite a bit of crossover, but that’s understandable because Hollywood was a small town back then, and Longworth can’t be sure if the listener has just dipped in for a particular episode. She’s careful not to delve too deep into territory she’s already covered though.
Those are both very minor negatives.
Now the positive! It’s utterly enchanting.
From “Join me, won’t you?” (Yes please, because your podcast is amazing) to “That’s me” I have found every episode absorbing, enveloping, and captivating. Some of the tales I already knew either most of the story or elements of it - I’m 30+ episodes in after about two weeks - but most of them were unfamiliar to me and a handful featured people I’d never heard of. It’s a history lesson, delivered by a woman who clearly knows her stuff. The depth and breadth of her research shines through in every sentence.
Naturally it errs toward tragedy, so there’s something of a melancholy air hanging over this podcast, but if you love movies - particularly old movies - then this is essential listening.
I’m writing this review because an episode or two ago Longworth invited listeners who enjoyed the podcast to “tell someone”. I’ve told every podcast-savvy movie fan I know already. And she invited listeners to rate and review on whatever platform they get their podcasts. I’m happy to do this.
