Sumner is rescued, and against all odds, lives. He resumes work and is visited by Joseph Hannah, the cabin boy. Sumner looks him over and makes a horrifying discovery, but when the crew spot and then kill their first whale, the incident is forgotten. The next day, a body is found. A suspect is quickly put forward - but Sumner can't escape a feeling of dread that Drax is the true culprit.
