It’s rare these days that the second series of a comedy, has quite so much to live up to. The first series of Car Share was a work of genius, introducing us over six episodes, to Peter Kay’s John Redmond and the revelation that is Sian Gibson, as Kayleigh Kitson, two of the most beautifully realised characters to grace a television screen in a very long time. Their daily commute became an hilarious celebration of the mundane and the everyday. We all watched in delight as these two, initially unlikely companions first became friends and slowly became something much more akin to soul mates. All while reflecting on life and singing along to the glorious musical cheese-fest that is Forever FM. Their happy arrangement seemed to have been wrenched apart at the end of series one, as Kayleigh, moved to Bury and 45 minutes further away from John. Series 2 picks up from this point and over four, all too brief episodes, takes us on the next stage of their journey. There are some terrific moments here, from a scene steeling turn from Game of Thrones Conleth Hill as Elsie the Smurfette, to a safari park visit that results in the unforgettable appearance of an accidental passenger. A moment destined to be up there with some of sitcoms most memorable scenes. Also, look out for a lovely performance from Elbow’s Guy Garvey. The now infamous final episode packs a real emotional punch which has been the stuff of much debate since. It’s to the credit of all involved that the conclusion is so affecting. With the news of two more episodes to come, including a series finale in 2018, it’ll be interesting to see where they ultimately take the story. While arguably much broader and more slapstick than than the subtle masterpiece that was series 1, Car Share series 2 still remains head and shoulders above the rest. The chemistry between the two leads is as compelling as ever. It’s to the infinite credit of all involved, that John and Kayleigh feel like friends you never want to part with.
