Description

Career-soldier Wilhelm, his pacifist younger brother Friedhelm, and their friends Charlotte, Viktor and Greta say farewell in the summer of 1941 in Berlin, with the promise to meet again after the war. Wilhelm and his brother have been ordered to the eastern front, Charlotte will join them as a nurse in a field hospital there. In Berlin, Greta makes a name for herself as a singer, with the help of a high-ranking party official. Her Jewish boyfriend, Viktor is despatched to a concentration camp in the east. Little do they know how much the unfathomable experiences, deprivations and terrors of the war will change them. It is the experiences of friendship and betrayal, belief and disappointment, illusion and insight, guilt and responsibility that will change their lives forever.

Brilliant

One of the finest series of films I've seen on the Second World War. Based on the German perspective it is breathtaking cinema. Amazingly realised and for a change realistic battle scenes without the usual frantic gore that most modern war films seem compelled to show! The films showed 5 different lives touching upon a wide range of experiences throughout the war. Only one word for these films, superb!! This is how to do it Hollywood!

Genius

This is without a doubt one of the most moving war films I have ever seen, it was odd seeing it from a German perspective but I now believe I should have done that decades ago. Excellent viewing and be gods did it change my opinion....

Up there with the best

Utterly brilliant. It's strength is making you believe in the characters and caring about what happens to them. I can't recommend it highly enough

Superlative

Superb is a far too over used word; it should be reserved for the truly excellent. It should be reserved for this superb series.

Excellent series - but ...

.. can’t give it 5 stars as the playback via Apple TV was very jerky at times. Did anyone else get the same problem ?

Brilliant

This is a superb dramatisation of how war brutalises the human condition - I'm extremely impressed

More quality drama from the BBC

After the successful run of "Scandi-noir", the BBC have dabled with content from Italy, Belgium, and now Germany. The standard remains high, and as with famous German WW2 films such as Das Boot and Downfall, it's fascinating to see the war from the other side. So far (only one episode in) it's highly entertaining, if a little fluffy given the subject matter.
As for this being subtitled, the mind boggles how someone would buy a TV show or movie without checking it first on IMDB or something similar. It only takes 3 seconds. Depressing stuff.

Superb series.

The mentality of someone who would give a superb series one star just because iTunes don't say it has subtitles defeats me. For the record, this is a marvellous German series telling a familiar story from a very unfamiliar perspective. Writing, performances and production values are all strong. Highly recommended.
